Phimosis - Laser circumcision

What is phimosis?

Phimosis is a condition of the penis where the foreskin (skin that lines the glans) cannot be fully withdrawn since it is very narrow. In phimosis the hole in the foreskin is too narrow to let the glans out. Phimosis is normal in the newborn and disappears around the age of 13. The main difficulty it generates is that it hinders urination and sexual intercourse.

Why happens?

  • The tip of the foreskin is too narrow.
  • The inner surface of the foreskin is attached to the glans. This is normal in children and abnormal in adults..
  • The penile frenulum is too short to allow complete retraction of the foreskin.
  • Phimosis can also be caused by fibrous rings caused by chronic inflammations.

What happens when the foreskin does not come down?

The complications of phimosis are penile infections, urinary tract infections, and painful intercourse.

Phimosis operation: what is it?

At Hoogstra Medical Centers we carry out these procedures with To be Carbon dioxide. Surgical methods range from circumcision or complete removal of the foreskin, leaving the glans permanently exposed. The resection of the foreskin can also be partial, only where the narrowing is, and the rest of the foreskin can be preserved.

The laser circumcision is the solution of choice for many cases of balanitis and postitis

What are the advantages of laser circumcision?

The advantage of using this technology over conventional surgery is given because the laser cuts and coagulates more precisely, producing less residual damage. For this reason, this procedure is:

  • Less painful.
  • Less recovery time.
  • Lower complication rate.
  • It can be done under local anesthesia and on an outpatient basis.

What is paraphimosis?

It defines paraphimosis when the narrow foreskin is behind the glans. This situation can cause in some circumstances a surgical emergency because compression of the glans can lead to vascular suffering.
