What are the clinical characteristics of erysipeloid carcinoma?

Erysipeloid carcinoma presents as patch Thickened and red skin that resembles cellulite. Although generally tender, it can be asymptomatic and it doesn't cause fever. Erysipeloid carcinoma is most often found in the chest. May appear within a scar, involve an arm, or infrequently, the head and neck region. In cases of breast Cancer, the other breast may be involved. 2

The border of an erysipeloid carcinoma patch may be clearly raised, red, and swollen due to tumor cells that block lymphatic vessels and releasing cytokines.3

Erysipeloid carcinoma tends to occur near the primary tumor. Signs that the cancer has spread to the skin include:

  • A firm, round or oval, mobile, painless nodule
  • Skin carcinoma, also called sclerodermoid carcinoma: indurated like scar plates due to infiltration of cancer cells collagen
  • Telangiectoid carcinoma: red spots with numerous blood vessels (telangiectasias) or lymphatic vessels (lymphangiectasia) due to infiltration by cancer cells.

What causes erysipeloid carcinoma?

Most cases of erysipeloid carcinoma are due to underlying adenocarcinoma, most commonly breast adenocarcinoma.4 4 It has also been described with melanomaand tumors of the parotid glandthyroid larynx, lung, fallopian tube, cervix, ovary, colony, prostate, pancreas, and stomach.4-5 It can rarely be the first sign tumor4 4

Erysipeloid carcinoma usually appears after chemotherapy, radiotherapy or surgery to remove the tumor and / or local lymph nodes. These treatments are believed to lead to the shedding of tumor cells through lymphatic.6 6

How is erysipeloid carcinoma diagnosed?

Diagnosis of erysipeloid carcinoma can be difficult. Delay in diagnosis is common, as it may resemble infection (cellulite / erysipelas) or radiation dermatitis.7 7

A hit biopsy of the affected skin is required to confirm the diagnosis. Histopathology Erysipeloid carcinoma shows malignant cells within cutaneous lymphatics.

Management of erysipeloid carcinoma

Erysipeloid carcinoma cannot be removed by surgery. Palliative treatment with chemo-radiotherapy can cause regression.9 9 the forecast of a patient with erysipeloid carcinoma is generally poor.
